Dana's Story
Life
City College was the only place that didn't care if my total SAT score was a minus figure. So, I enrolled & registered in appropriate courses such as Bone Head English & PE. I watched John Brandenburg perform as a cheer leader for the football team while OJ Simpson played football for CCSF. Great piece of trivia: OJ played his first bowl game with CCSF after an un-defeated season in the "Prune Bowl", which was located in the high profile city of Fresno CA. After my second semester, I had a pretty darn good tennis game & could beat most anybody in a game of Chess while "studying" in the library or eating a cheap plate of spaghetti in the school cafeteria.
Between 1965 to 1969, I was active with the American Youth Hostels & organized outdoor activities for the Golden Gate Council. During the Summer of Love, I used to bike from my apartment in Haight-Ashbury to North Beach. You could find me at the Old Spaghetti Factory where for $1.85 anyone could eat all the spaghetti & garlic French bread you wanted. After dinner my habit was to go across the street on upper Grant Avenue to drink coffee and listen to folk music at the Coffee & Confusion, or the Coffee Gallery. Sometimes I hung out at Vesuvio's Cafe on Columbus Avenue to play a game of Chess with the local regulars.
My Military Draft Lottery number was #356. The only lottery I never won anything, but felt great about it. So, I hung up my skate board with steel wheels that Ambrose Curry gave me, & got a job as a restaurant manager on Kwajalein, Marshall Islands, Micronesia. My next job found me as a Post Master on Canton Island, American Samoa. After some fantastic diving, getting a tan as dark as a coconut, and hair that would have made Jimmy Hendrix look more conservative I got homesick. "Island Fever" got to me instead of the desalinazation water, so I hopped on a plane going towards civilization and the Bay Area. If you saw me get off the plane, you would swear I was competing with Ambrose, in the "Best Big Foot Look-a-like Contest".
Ambrose has lived in Lihue, Kauai since 197?, married & raised 5 kids while selling stuff in his health food store. He is known by all the locals, and is a legend. He still has his wicked sense of humor, sells his art, custom made surfboards, and gives sermons to his customers with an extra-terrestial philosophy about life and surfing.
Back to After I returned from the South Pacific. I enrolled in the Hotel Restaurant School at City College. Upon completion of the program in 1971, I worked in hotel management from the Mid-West to the West Coast areas. During my food service career, I held various management positions with major food service companies. My responsibilities ranged from opening new stores, developing concepts, restaurant design, purchasing, facilities management, and, multi-unit management.
Since 1978 I worked at two careers simultaneously. Food Service & Real Estate Investment. In 1997, I got tired of the 90...Expand for more
hour work week & got my real estate license & focused on real estate sales. I specialized in residential and commercial "fixers" because of my hands on expertise in the "trades" in repair & maintenance and, structual & construction issues.
I am an active supporter of non-profit educational services for youth & adults and participate in fund raising activities. I am a volunteer with "APAYL" Asian Pacific Islanders Promoting Advocacy Through Youth Leadership" (community leadership training for high school students), &, "OASES" Oakland Asian Student Educational Services (after school mentoring program for elementry & middle school kids). I use my experience from the food service to help plan, market, & cook for fund raisers. The smallest event was a silent auction dinner for ten, &, the largest was a school carnival.
My family consists of my wife of 35 years, and three daughters. All my daughters are very artistic and independent. My oldest is a Co-Director of AYPAL; the Middle daughter is a gallery artist; and, my youngest is getting a job in a major film Studio in the film industry. She's had her own film production company since High School and has done quite well. Did I say she won the San Francisco Film Festival Award while still in High School?...bragging rights from a proud father. My wife & I live in Oakland. If I haven't contacted you its because my hard drive crashed a couple of times, wiping out all my data & info. So, I hope to hear from some of you old dinosaurs out there. My email address is: danaeng at comcast.net
I look forward to hearing from you guys

My Goals before my dementia kicks in are:
2007 - semi "almost" retired.
2008 - semi "mostly" retired and mostly traveling. To verify, see if I am: 1. driving around in a Lexus 430 SC convertible sportster with a metallic "eggplant color" and fancy rims; 2. have a lot of funny looking ink stamps on my passport. 3. I spend more time cycling, taking photography classes, and learning how to become more computer literate.
2009 - well, I didn't get around to any of the above and, my Miata convertable is sitting real chill in my driveway with flat tires from not being driven in two+ years. But I joined a dragonboat racing team called the Renegades that competes in local and out of town races. As a group, we are known as the "Misfits, Malcontents, & Miscreants".
20?? - full retirement. To verify, see if my garage is empty, except for my power tools, and I actually drive my convertable.... My hair will longer with a lot more grey and, I will have weekly massages after my pedicure. Other signs that show good use of my time will be evident if I am computer literate, can use most of the features on my cell phone, and if I am able to order off a Chinese Menu at a restaurant. And, by that time, Halley's Comet will have returned after orbiting the solar system through a black hole and, the dinasours have returned to earth ....So, What's Your Story ?!
